As part of the US Federal Railroad (FRA) program to evaluate innovative technologies for high speed railways, Neoloy Geocells were used to stabilize problematic sections on Amtrak’s North-East corridor. Over several years, senior researchers from Columbia and Univ. of Delaware monitored the impact of Neoloy Geocells on sections of track subject to frequent ballast fouling.

Data from the research report demonstrated that due to Neoloy’s very high tensile strength and long-term resistance to plastic and elastic deformation under heavy dynamic loading, “…the results showed a significant reduction in pressure at the ballast/subgrade interface on the order of 50% as well as a corresponding reduction in the rate of degradation on the order of a factor of 6+.” (Palese et al, (2017), AREMA Conference, Indianapolis).
